Aguacero and Bay Area Bomba y Plena Workshop

Latinx Heritage Month Event: Bomba is an integral and vibrant part of Puerto Rican culture and heritage, and is the most vital genre of Afro-Puerto Rican music and dance.  It is one of the oldest and most resonant forms in the Caribbean region. Bomba originated in the sugar cane plantations of Puerto Rico over 300 years ago. In Puerto Rico, Bomba has been practiced and passed on from generation to generation as a critical form of collective expression, cultural affirmation, and artistic pleasure, for well over three centuries.  This workshop will expand on the participatory element of the performance. Participants will learn basic steps and movement of one of the styles and rhythms of Bomba. They will learn about the various elements of Bomba percussion and practice playing some of the key instruments. Participants will also learn songs exemplary of the historical roots of Bomba. Join us in The HUB Cultural Center for an immersive cultural experience with Aguacero. Email Shelly Gomez, gomezs@sonoma.edu for more information.
