Honoring Uniting Building (HUB) Mural

About the Mural

The Honoring Uniting Building (HUB) Mural tells the story of honoring our past, uniting our present, and building our future at Sonoma State University. Through art and storytelling, the mural celebrates the identities, experiences, and communities that shape our university and reflects the HUB's commitment to fostering belonging, cultural expression, and student success.

The Story Behind the Mural

The mural reflects the HUB's guiding principles of honoring, uniting, and building. Moving from left to right, the artwork tells a visual story of the people, histories, and experiences that connect the Sonoma State community.

The design incorporates cultural graduations, representing the diverse identities of students and celebrating academic achievement and personal growth. Images inspired by Sonoma County's landscape and agricultural workers recognize the region's history and the communities whose labor and contributions have shaped it.

At its center, the mural celebrates the importance of community, connection, and belonging, reflecting the HUB's role as a space where students can express their identities, build relationships, and contribute to the university's future.

Bringing the Mural to Life

The mural was created by Twin Walls Mural Company through a collaborative process involving Sonoma State students, faculty, and staff.

In March 2026, Twin Walls Mural Company facilitated community visioning sessions to gather ideas, experiences, and perspectives that would inform the artwork. These conversations helped shape a design reflecting the identities, values, and aspirations of the Sonoma State community.

In April 2026, the campus community was invited to participate in a community painting day, providing an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to contribute directly to the creation of the mural.

The completed artwork reflects both the artistic vision of Twin Walls Mural Company and the collective contributions of the campus community.

Project Timeline

The mural committee established the project's goals, reviewed artist proposals, and selected Twin Walls Mural Company to create the mural.

The project moved into design development, establishing the artistic direction and themes that would guide the mural.

Twin Walls Mural Company facilitated separate visioning sessions with Sonoma State University students and with faculty and staff to gather ideas, experiences, and perspectives that would inform the mural's design.

The mural mockup was shared, providing an opportunity to review the proposed artwork and its representation of the HUB's guiding principles.

Students, faculty, and staff were invited to participate in painting the mural, contributing directly to the creation of the artwork.

The completed mural was unveiled and celebrated with the Sonoma State University community, recognizing the artists, student vision, and collective contributions that brought the project to life.
